Build on your metal skills by exploring the process of bezel setting. This one day workshop will concentrate on making simple but beautiful bezels for pendants, earrings or rings in sterling silver. The workshop will cover step and fancy bezels.

Bring your own stones or choose from a selection of cabochon stones sold at the studio. Make sure the stones you select are either an oval or round cabochon (flat bottom) with a hardness of 7 or higher on the moh scale.  Recommended stones include sapphires, tourmalines, amethysts, rubies, topaz, and citrines.

Prerequisite: You must have basic soldering and fabrication experience to take this class.

Learn to measure, account for depth and shape, cut a seat, and set faceted and cabochon stones in a tube setting.  This one day tube setting class will cover how to cut a seat for faceted and cabochon stones and set with a tube setting kit and foredoom hand piece.  Bring your own faceted or cabochon stones, practice with cubic zirconium stones or purchase stones at the studio.

Prerequisite: Intermediate/Advance level - You must have basic soldering and fabrication experience to take this class.

CLOISONNE ENAMEL

A technique of applying powdered glass to metal and then torch or kiln firing it to its melting point the enamel cools in brilliant colors to make an amazing decoration on your metalwork. The technique dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians who used it on pottery and jewelry.

In this one day workshop, you will use cloisonne wire to create a design of your own and learn how to apply enamel properly, fire to the correct temperature, counter-enamel to prevent cracking and wet-sand and polish to create a finished piece.

    Gold has always held a fascination for its beauty throughout history. 

    But hey...

    some of us have made some regrettable purchases in the past or have been passed down some really unattractive pieces :P

    But fear not!

    In this 1 day workshop we will show you how to melt down your regrets and turn them into beautiful gold bands :)

    DISCLAIMER: Not all gold will recycle well especially vintage pieces that have been worked and re-worked on.  Since we do not know for sure how your pieces were produced, we can not guarantee 100% success.  If contaminants cause your piece to be unrecyclable, we will provide silver for you to proceed with the class and continue to learn the technique of recycling.

    Jewelry is usually stamped with the karat.  If you're not sure what type of gold you have please stop by the studio before hand and we will help you measure and test the karat of your gold.  We do not recommend recycling chains, if so you are doing it your own risk.

    The micro torch is a handy tool that is essential for small scale soldering.  In this workshop you will learn how to use a micro torch to solder a small prong onto a dainty ring, set the stone, polish and clean. 

    We will provide faceted stones but if you would like to pick your own stone, make sure you get a 3mm round faceted stone with a good hardness such as a sapphire (they are available in assorted colors).

    We will provide Sterling Silver but if you would like to work in Gold you will need to bring in 3" of 1.25mm soft round wire along with a size 10Pt Prong Basket Setting (for a 3mm faceted stone).

    Explore the movement of metal from recycling to forming, rolling, forging, and filing. Start from scratch with either our scrap sterling silver or bring your own! We will roll out wire stock and vary thickness of the wire for non-uniform bands. Play with new textures and patinas to create new surfaces. Become comfortable with how to move and stretch metal without disrupting and cracking your work.  Leave with a one of a kind sterling silver ring forged by hand from scratch.

    PIERCING AND SAWING

    Piercing and sawing to create designs in sheet metal is an essential skill in jewelry-making. In this class, we will learn how to transfer a pattern to brass or copper, drill openings in the metal, and saw out portions of the piece to make a lacy openwork design. We will also learn how to use the saw, files and sandpaper to clean up and finish our pieces. 

    This is an all-level class, open to anyone who wants to learn or practice sawing skills. Choose from an array of patterns appropriate to your level, or come with your own designs.

    PLIQUE-A-JOUR ENAMEL

    Learn to make luminous backless enamels that look like tiny stained glass windows. Invented in Byzantine times and most famously practiced by Rene Lalique, the plique-a-jour technique is rarely taught today. In this class, we will learn the fundamentals of plique-a-jour on a pre-made piece.


    In this eight-hour workshop, you will learn how to create a false backing for plique-a-jour enamels, how to apply the enamel powder, and how to polish and finish your piece on both sides, as well as principles of design for this and other enamel techniques.
