Forging a Bracelet
Learn the art of forging! One of the oldest known metalsmithing processes still practiced by artists/metalsmiths today to create a wide range of art work in metal from jewelry to utilitarian objects such as flatware.
In this two day workshop, students will be introduced to the traditional tools and techniques of “cold forging”. Students will learn how to hammer metal into bracelet forms using the “drawing out”, “upsetting” and “planishing” techniques, implementing the tools of the metalsmith such as an anvil and specialized hammers and metal stakes to give pattern and shape to raw copper and sterling silver stock. Students will in turn apply this knowledge to create their own unique, personalized piece of jewelry.

Raphael Martin is an artist and goldsmith with extensive experience of the jewelry industry and the field of jewelry production.
Raphael received his BFA at Memphis college of Art, and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He currently works in NYC as a freelance designer and metals consultant.
“I have a great appreciation for the craft of metalworking and the visual arts. I have a passion for creating unique sculptural pieces that convey a story line. I am interested in the way that mechanisms provide kinetic movement in my work - and how these movements mirror reality.
I search for the humorous qualities of daily life and transcribe them in my work – using metal as a medium for dialog”.
Raphael has recently returned from traveling in Mexico where he sipped some fine sipping tequila.
